BOOKS ON LIEDER AND ART SONG:

Some wonderful resources for studying art song are Deborah Stein and Robert Spillman's Poetry into Song: Performance and Analysis of Lieder, and Carol Kimball's Art Song: Linking Poetry and Music and Song: A Guide to Art Song Style and Literature. Full information of these sources is included below, along with a few other books.

ON SCHUBERT LIEDER:

This list contains only a small sprinkling of books on Schubert. John Reed's The Schubert Song Companion  is very practical, and Graham Johnson's Schubert: The Complete Songs (in three huge volumes) is a magnificent tome, with articles on every song Schubert wrote, as well as on poets and friends of Schubert. His writing is also tremendously fun to read! Finally, you should get your hands on anything by Susan Youens, the goddess of Schubert lieder.  I have included some of her books and book chapters below, with several more books by other authors, but the list is endless.
